Property boundaries in the original 13 colonies were described using a system called metes and bounds. You will see these descriptions for all the land grants found on the NC Land Grants website, and they are key to determining the location of the land and your ancestor’s neighbors.
The creator of this website, David McCorkle, will be teaching a 2 1/2 hour metes and bounds workshop on Friday October 25 at the NC Genealogical Society Fall Conference in Raleigh NC. This hands-on workshop will teach you how to find, read and understand these records, how to create maps of properties and neighborhoods using traditional hand drawing and specialized software, and how to locate the property today.
The workshop is only available in person for an extra cost with limited seating – first come, first served. Conference registration includes 15 lectures either in person or live streamed, all recorded for on-demand playback until December 31, 2024. Topics include NC records and research, DNA, AI in genealogy, and more!
