Here are the major changes:
CONTENT
Granville Grants. Data and images for all Granville District Grants are now available, with about 1/3 of the grants directly linked to the corresponding images. Do not confuse these with grants from Granville County – they are an entirely different type of NC land grant issued from 1748 to 1763 in many NC counties. These images can only be found online here.
Loose document images. A total of 98,766 images of loose documents (warrants, surveys, etc.) have been added for all of Alleghany, Anson, Catawba, Dobbs, Gaston, Lincoln, Rowan, Tryon, and Wayne Counties. These new images are not yet directly linked to each grant, but there is a process where you can easily find them. This makes a total of 200,054 images of loose documents for 14 counties. We have started a new project to raise funds to get the remainder online. Click here for more information.
Land Entry Books. The state required counties to send copies of their land entry books from 1779 to 1795. Images of all existing copies have been added to the website, but are not yet indexed.
SEARCHING
Improved name matching. We are now using the Metaphone system for searching for names which accounts for common spelling differences in names. You can still control how broad or narrow to search.
Simplified queries. The Query page has been simplified so most searches can be done on the first few lines. All the advanced options are still available
Quick search. You can quickly search for a name from the home page, and see a partial list of results without having to sign in
VIEWING GRANTS
Virtual shuck image sections reorganized. Virtual shucks will now show the page(s) from the patent book first, followed by the loose document images. For Granville Grants, that will be followed by the Granville Deeds and the Granville Loose Documents
Thumbnails visible when viewing full images. Thumbnails of all documents for a grant are visible at the bottom when viewing full images. Click on a thumbnail to switch to that image.
Narrative summary for each grant. The information for each grant is shown at the top in an easy-to-read narrative format.
VIEWING IMAGES
Adobe flash is no longer required (this option became available in early 2020)
View within reel. Images can be viewed within their reel so you can see all the frames before and after. This can be useful in case of linking errors.
The Images page now begins with a short directory by type of reel so you don’t have to scroll through the list all the reels – only that type.
Contributor acknowledgment. The person or organization who paid for digitization of a specific reel is noted at the bottom of each image
SECURITY
All pages (previously only sign in) are https secured (this was available in early 2020)
User password reset. Users may now reset their passwords if they forget, as long as their email addresses have been validated.
